Claptrap Rescue missions
From Borderlands Wiki
There are several broken Claptraps located throughout Pandora. They are easily found if the player is paying close enough attention, as they will say things such as "I'm leaking! I'm leaking!! There's oil everywhere!" Note that this becomes even more visible with the subtitles option turned on.
After talking to the Claptrap and accepting a mission to repair them, they can then be restored with a Repair Kit. Once repaired, they will then reward the player with a Backpack SDU (Storage Deck Upgrade). Claptraps rescued on the second playthrough may not yield a Backpack SDU however. The first five in Borderlands have been known to have a chance of awarding them, while later Claptraps have not been seen to do so.
There are a total of ten broken Claptraps in the vanilla release of Borderlands and an additional Claptrap to be rescued in the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned (downloadable expansion). This article is meant to help those who cannot find all eleven.
Please note: In some cases, presumably on the 2nd playthrough, an undiscovered claptrap will not reward the player with a Backpack SDU. This goes for claptraps that were found in the 1st playthrough, as well as some that were not found until the 2nd.
NOTE 2: During the 2nd playthrough, the first five rescue missions randomly award either a Backpack SDU or a Grenade Mod. If you do not recieve a Backpack SDU you can Ctrl + Alt + Delete and end the game (DO NOT SAVE OR HIT A SAVE POINT) then restart the game and hand the quest in again and again until you do. (if you have a console version you may be able to turn off the console to do this, however I have not tested this method.)
EDIT by GastNDorf: I have a method for consoles to reset quickly. Save when you get the tool box, then go to clap trap. If you get a grenade mod, put off your shield and throw yourself a grenade, then when you are dying, push the button to respawn. WHEN YOU ARE ON VORTEX, push start and quit your game: a message will tell you that the game can't save at this point, so you can quit safely. Then repeat untill getting the SDU.
An option for Xbox 360 gamers is to press the "Xbox Guide" button, and then hit 'Y' to return to the Dashboard. This will quit the game without saving.
Alternatively you can exit the game just before handing in the quest then backup your save file. Next start the game again then hand in the quest, if you don't get it, exit the game, restore the backup, hand the quest in again. Repeat until you get the Backpack SDU.
