Coach Guns are double-barreled shotguns: they shoot more pellets and inflict more damage than single-barreled shotguns but they consume two ammo per shot. Their usual magazine size is two, making most Coach Guns single-fire weapons, but they can occasionally generate with a larger magazine which gives them one more shot.
Among other uses, Coach Guns are an excellent choice for Anarchy-based Mechromancers: the frequent empty-magazine reloading provides quick gains in Anarchy stacks, the Smaller, Lighter, Faster skill dramatically increases the shots-per-second of the weapon, and the accuracy penalty from accumulated Anarchy stacks will have less noticeable effect on the already-inaccurate Coach Gun.
Notable Variants[]
Borderlands 2
Orphan Maker – Uniquecursed shotgun that fires only two pellets with significantly increased damage, but does 5% of its listed damage to the user when fired.
Tidal Wave – Unique shotgun that fires an array of horizontal pellets that move forward in a wave pattern.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Boomacorn – Unique shotgun that fires 5 explosive projectiles with a random element for each projectile.
Too Scoops – Uniquecryo shotgun that fires grenade-like projectiles.
Though there is some variety in magazine size, only one variant of the Coach Gun has a magazine size under two. The common-rarity Handy Coach Gun has a magazine size of one. Typically, this does not impact the weapon's performance, as it behaves similarly to any other common-rarity Coach Gun, firing a large group of pellets and taking two ammo, drawing the second from the user's reserves.
This variety of Coach Gun will be incompatible with Gaige with her Smaller, Lighter, Faster skill as it reduces the magazine to zero, preventing the weapon from being used at all.
This variety is also often used for Salvador to activate Money Shot.
The Coach Gun is obtained randomly from any suitable loot source.
Trivia[]
Originally, the "Coach Gun" title was intended for the Iron.
This gun, like any Jakobs shotgun, can have the prefix "Doc's," which is a reference to Doc Holliday [1].
