This is Commandant Steele of the Atlas Corporation Crimson Lance, Starborne Brigade. Be advised. In preparation of upcoming special operations of the Lance, I have ordered the ECHO network shut down. Any attempt to circumvent our control will be met with punishment of death. Do not test me, or we may shut down the commerce grid as well. This is the only warning you will receive.
— ECHO Log: Commandant Steele - General Announcement

The Crimson Lance is the highly trained private military company of the Atlas Corporation. They impose a form of dictatorial law upon civilians in their dominion and are considered by many to be "Serious Badasses". This para-military organization of the Atlas Corporation is exceptionally well funded and equipped and is known to prefer the use of military might to get their way.[1] The Crimson Lance para-military/security force is one of the most highly-trained para-military forces in existence. On Pandora, they viewed themselves as the planet's law enforcement agency.

History

Pre-Borderlands

The Atlas Corporation created the Crimson Lance to ensure they would always have access to elite para-military and security forces. As the reputation of the effectiveness of the Crimson Lance continued to increase, attacks against the Atlas Corporation quickly decreased, eventually making it difficult to justify the cost of continuing the Crimson Lance. Rather than disbanding them, the Atlas Corporation contracted out the Crimson Lance as mercenaries.

The Dahl Corporation was the first to purchase a contract and used the Crimson Lance to attack and destroy an Atlas Corporation-owned supply station. Hours before the attack, the Atlas Corporation purchased an extensive insurance policy from the Dahl Corporation on the station to be attacked. In the end, the Dahl Corporation paid for both the Crimson Lance contract and the rebuilding of the facility, making it a very profitable venture for the Atlas Corporation. All current Crimson Lance contracts contain a clause prohibiting them from being directly used against Atlas Corporation property and interests. At the end of the Corporate Wars, they escaped retribution and restrictions on their business by selling a controlling interest in their company to the Dahl Corporation, which now employs the Crimson Lance exclusively as elite security forces.

During the Atlas Corporation's colonization of Pandora, the Crimson Lance provided security for the corporation's Eridian archaeological digs (such as the excavation site at Crawmerax's Lair) against the planet's hostile fauna. When the Dahl Corporation's Eridium mining effort at Headstone Mine discovered a fragment of a Vault Key, First General of the Crimson Lance Alphonso Knoxx sent D Company of the 3rd Starborne Brigade, led by the Siren Commandant Steele, to secure the Vault Key fragment. When the Crimson Lance arrived on Pandora, they found that the Dahl Corporation had abandoned the planet and had released all of the corporation's convict labor, leading to the formation of the Bandit, Prisoner, Rat, Sand Pirate, Biker, and Savages factions while also abandoning the 191st Brigade and its employees.

When D Company arrived on Pandora, they established the Crimson Armory, roadblocks along The Crimson Tollway, Deep Fathoms, The Ridgeway, and Road's End in the Parched Fathoms region. They constructed the Crimson Fastness, The Backdoor, and the Crimson Enclave to control the ECHOnet and to secure the areas around the Eridian Promontory, The Descent, and The Vault of The Destroyer. Lance Mines were placed in Pandora's seas to control the waterways during one of Pandora's wet seasons and can be found scattered across the dried-up seabed of the Sunken Sea, Deep Fathoms, and Road's End in the Parched Fathoms and the Tundra Express. The Crimson Lance buried Crimson Lance Chests in Road's End to serve as Atlas Corporation supply stashes in case of emergencies.[2]

Due to the public relations fallout from Admiral of the 3rd Starborne Brigade, Admiral Mikey's "girls are stupid" re-election campaign (which was confusing as it was unfortunate, as the position of Crimson Lance Admiral is not decided by-election in the first place). The Atlas Corporation ordered the Crimson Lance to kidnap and torture several dozen young girls to turn them into unstoppable assassins to show that the Atlas Corporation held great respect and affection for its female employees. This effort was highly criticized by those few residents of Pandora who find child trafficking distasteful, but the operation was a great success for the Crimson Lance; alongside the Lance Royal Guard, the Lance Assassins remain their most prolific and efficient killers, and the Lance Assassins 'lack of family ties' (a euphemism, as the Atlas Corporation forced them to murder their parents) makes them remarkably loyal to the Atlas Corporation and its principles. Additionally, using the Lance Assassins on promotional paraphernalia is a significant boon to the Atlas Corporation's image and the Crimson Lance's enlistment numbers.

Eventually, the troops of D Company abandoned their mission and fortified themselves in the Crimson Fastness/The Backdoor/the Crimson Enclave complex and forced the populace of the Dahl Corporation's mining settlement of Sanctuary to be subservient to them.

The Crimson Lance hired a Bandit faction to attack the Dahl Corporation's mining settlement of Haven, now called Old Haven, causing the survivors of the attack to flee and form the colony of New Haven. After the Bandits outlived their usefulness to the Crimson Lance, they wiped out the Bandit population of the settlement. After turning Old Haven into their new fiefdom,[3] the Crimson Lance established a satellite communications array[4] and trapped the CL4P-TP General Purpose Robot that functions as the doorman to The Salt Flats from The Rust Commons East[5]. The Atlas Corporation also constructed a hidden facility under Old Haven for the corporation's Gortys Project and deployed a Crimson Lance garrison led by General Pollux to defend the facility[6].

Borderlands: Origins - Issue 1 "Roland"

Sergeant Roland of the Crimson Lance's 114th Bouncer Division uncovered evidence that an employee of the Atlas Corporation, Higgins, was siphoning money from the corporation and was planning on pinning the crime on Sergeant Roland and his team while stationed on Pandora. Higgins ordered Sergeant Roland to lead his team into The Collapsed Valley and eliminate the Crumblers preventing the Atlas Corporation from transporting supplies through the area. After stopping several Crumblers, Higgins and several Crimson Lance soldiers ambushed Sergeant Roland's team, killing Aebri, Scraps, and Boozer to cover up his crime. Higgins wounded Sergeant Roland and left him to be killed by the Crumblers, but Sergeant Roland managed to escape and become a Vault Hunter.[7]

Borderlands

This is Commandant Steele of the Atlas Corporation Crimson Lance, D Company, 3rd Starborne Brigade. I've just been informed that you have arrived on Pandora in search of the Vault, and within minutes, have started killing the locals and causing a disturbance. This planet is under the authority of the Atlas Corporation, and any Eridian artifacts found here are Atlas property: possession of such property carries a stiff penalty. I invite you to turn yourself in at once to the nearest Lance outpost and surrender any information or artifacts in your possession. Consider this your one and only warning.
— ECHO Log: Commandant Steele - Introducing Steele.

After the Vault Hunters, Roland, Brick, Mordecai, and the Siren Lilith acquired their first fragment of the Vault Key from the Bandit lord of The Arid Badlands, Sledge, Commandant Steele sent an ECHO transmission informing the Vault Hunters that all Eridian artifacts on Pandora are the property of the Atlas Corporation and to turn themselves in.[8] The Crimson Lance garrison in Old Haven activated the settlement's distress smoke signals to draw Bandits into a trap until the Vault Hunters assaulted and extinguished the distress signals.[9]

In an attempt to kill the Vault Hunters, the Crimson Lance hired Doctor Patricia Tannis to send them to free the CL4P-TP General Purpose Robot Doorman to The Salt Flats in Old Haven[5] and to send them to murder the Bandit Lord of The Salt Flats, Baron Flynt, for a non-existent fourth Vault Key fragment.[10]While the Vault Hunters were battling Baron Flynt on top of Thor, the Crimson Lance imprisoned Dr. Tannis and stole the Vault Key.[11] After the death of Baron Flynt, Commandant Steele declared martial law on Pandora, shut down the ECHOnet,[12] and deployed Crimson Lance forces from Lance Assault Pods into The Salt Flats, who proceeded to eliminate the majority of the local Bandit population.

Commandant Steele sent Master McCloud and two Lance Royal Guards to halt the Vault Hunters at The Backdoor[13] while she led a Crimson Lance force against the Guardians in the Eridian Promontory and The Descent to reach The Vault of The Destroyer. The Crimson Lance was able to stall the Vault Hunters long enough for Commandant Steele to get to The Vault, where she used her Siren abilities to activate the Vault Key, open The Vault in front of the Vault Hunters, and release The Destroyer.[14]

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned

When the Jakobs Corporation's employee, Dr. Ned, accidentally created Zombies in his secret lab in Old Haven, a Zombie outbreak erupted in the settlement, infecting the local populace, killing and turning the members of the Crimson Lance garrison into Lance Zombies (except for the Gortys Project's facility's garrison), and turning the settlement into Dead Haven.[15]

Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot

This guy's weapon is insane... You'd better be quick on your feet! Here he is! Masterrrr McCloooooud!

The remnants of D Company, who survived the Vault Hunters' assault on The Salt Flats, The Backdoor, the Crimson Fastness, the Crimson Enclave, the Eridian Promontory, The Descent, and the Zombie outbreak in Old Haven, were hired by Mad Moxxi to battle in The Gully, Hell-Burbia, and The Angelic Ruins arenas in The Underdome. Master McCloud (possibly alive due to the Hyperion Corporation's New-U Stations) was hired by Mad Moxxi to battle challengers during the Boss Waves.[16]

The Secret Armory of General Knoxx

Pandora. A planet that once knew only peace and prosperity under the fair and noble direction of the Atlas Corporation. But there were those that sought to disrupt our perfect existence. Thieves and murderers. Perverts and scoundrels. The lawless garbage unleashed an unspeakable evil upon Pandora not known since the age of the Gods. But together, we shall not despair. Atlas has not forgotten you. We are returning and will restore order and security to your planet. When we arrive, we will...
— "Respecting your Superiors" from Atlas Educational Films, from The Secret Armory of General Knoxx introduction.

After the death of Commandant Steele and the opening of The Vault of The Destroyer, Admiral Mikey sent General Knoxx and a large force of the 3rd Starborne Brigade to Pandora with no further orders about what to do when they arrived. General Knoxx arrived on Pandora and began investigating Commandant Steele's failure,[17] stockpiling munitions in the Crimson Armory,[18] re-established Crimson Lance outposts along Road's End, Deep Fathoms, The Crimson Tollway, and The Ridgeway, installing Lance Probe stations across the entire highway, established Crimson Lancer patrols on the highway, re-fitted the Crimson Lance forces on Pandora with more energy efficient weapons,[19] retook Old Haven from the Zombies, and sending updates to Admiral Mikey.[20]General Knoxx later became irritated with the incompetence of Admiral Mikey[21] (who was only five years old) and decided to use his Crimson Lance forces to reclaim Pandora for the Atlas Corporation and maintain the corporation's dominance of Eridian technology.

To assist General Knoxx in reclaiming Pandora, the Atlas Corporation sent Lance Assassins (and their top assassins, the Omega Assassins), who quickly cleaned up T-Bone Junction, reasserting Crimson Lance control over the settlement and deploying Lance Probes to spy on the settlement's population.[22] The top Omega Assassin, Agent Athena, informed General Knoxx that she would desert the Crimson Lance once she had found her long-lost sister, Jess. Atlas High Command was somehow informed about Agent Athena's plans for desertion and ordered the total annihilation of Jess's settlement. Agent Athena was deployed alongside the Crimson Lance forces to the settlement and killed Jess by mistake and afterward killed nine (and a half) Crimson Lance soldiers in a rage before being restrained.[23] Agent Athena escaped from the Crimson Lance using a stolen Outrunner[24] and fled to Moxxi's Red Light.

Due to the death of Commandant Steele, the Atlas Corporation placed bounties on the Vault Hunters' heads: $1,000,000.00 on Roland's head for Deserting the Crimson Lance and murder of a Crimson Lance Officer, $1,000,000.00 on Lilith's head for conspiracy, witchcraft, theft, and murder, $1,000,000.00 on Mordecai's head for poaching and possession of endangered species, $9,999,999.99 on Brick's head for murder and dismemberment of anything that moves, and an unknown Crimson Lance soldier offered an extra $1,000,000.00 for anyone who kills Bloodwing. Alongside the bounties, Atlas High Command declared an Omega-Senshu order on the Vault Hunters. It deployed five Lance Assassin squads to Pandora, each led by the Omega Assassins: Agent Vulcana, Agent Hera, Agent Minerva, Agent Ceresia, and Agent Helicon to assassinate the Vault Hunters.[25]

The Crimson Lance forces of the 3rd Starborne Brigade led by Lieutenant Kyros, Lieutenant Typhon, Commander Ajax, General Knoxx, and the Lance Assassins failed to kill the Vault Hunters, stopping them from destroying the Crimson Armory and breaking the Crimson Lance's hold over Pandora. After the destruction of the Crimson Armory and Marcus Kincaid hiring the Vault Hunters to thin out the number of Crimson Lance forces guarding the Parched Fathoms to lessen their grip over Pandora, the Atlas Corporation decided to sell the Crimson Armory to Marcus Kincaid.[26] The destruction of the Crimson Armory caused Crawmerax the Invincible, Armored Craw Worms, Green Craw Worms, and Craw Maggots to awaken in Crawmerax's Lair and overwhelm the excavation's Crimson Lance security detail.[27] To increase enlistment rates on Pandora and regain their losses, the Crimson Lance created the Circle of Duty, run by Director Zach, to test the worthiness of those seeking to join the Crimson Lance.[28]

Claptrap's New Robot Revolution

For the Crimson Lance!
Commandant Steele-Trap during battle against the Vault Hunters.

When the Hyperion Corporation reprogrammed the Fyrestone CL4P-TP General Purpose Robot, Claptrap, into the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap (INAC) to assassinate the Vault Hunters and accidentally caused all the CL4P-TP General Purpose Robots on Pandora to rise in a Robolution, two members of Crimson Lance were resurrected to serve in INAC's Claptrap army. General Knoxx and Commandant Steele were resurrected twice using Claptrap technology into General Knoxx-Trap and Commandant Steele-Trap in several attempts to stop the Vault Hunters.[29]

Post Borderlands

After the deaths of Lieutenant Kyros, Lieutenant Typhon, Commander Ajax, Master McCloud, Commandant Steele, General Knoxx, the Omega Assassins, the destruction of the Crimson Armory, the desertion of Agent Athena, the selling of Atlas Corporation's Power Core, Speed Core, and Shock Core technology to the Hyperion Corporation, Torgue Corporation, and Maliwan Corporation,[30] the Atlas Corporation decided to cut their loses and abandoned Pandora and any Crimson Lance personnel on the planet. The abandoned Crimson Lance soldiers of the 3rd Starborne Brigade retreated to Old Haven, presumably under the orders of General Pollux, to provide extra protection for the Gortys Project. With the poisoning of the Atlas Corporation CEO by Professor Nakayama, the death of Admiral Mikey, and the acquirement of the Atlas Corporation by the President of the Hyperion Corporation, Handsome Jack, the Crimson Lance stopped all operations on Pandora. With the acquisition of the Atlas Corporation by Handsome Jack, the Crimson Lance was disbanded.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Handsome Jack (on ECHO): Angel, pull up whatever we've got on Athena.

General Knoxx (on ECHO): Hnnnng, this is Knoxx. Today at 0300 hours, Lance Assassin Athena went AWOL, killing nine and a half Crimson Lance soldiers in the process. One of 'em got cut in two. Vertically. He's alive, but he's gotta hop everywhere. Anyway, my guess is she wasn't psyched about the Atlas High Command duping her into murdering her sister, which -- great idea, morons. You wanna kill somebody, you hire someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about the job. Regardless, she escaped -- with any luck she'll come back one day and kill all of us. Knoxx out.

Athena: Wise General Knoxx. Shame he had to die.

Wilhelm: Knoxx... that guy with the sickass robot suit? YOU killed him? Not bad!

Claptrap: Good ol' General Knoxx! He was the nicest, politest, most suicidal killing machine you ever could meet! That's why I revived him during my robolution and-- ERROR. FILES LOCKED.

— Recording on ECHO Device #1 and Athena's, Wilhelm's and Claptrap's responses during Boarding Party.

The former Omega Assassin, Athena, was crucial in Handsome Jack's take over of the Hyperion Corporation, finding the H-Source, the opening of the Vault of the Sentinel on Elpis, the discovery of the Vault of the Warrior on Pandora, the creation of the GUN Loaders, EXP Loaders and Constructors, unintentionally introducing Threshers to Pandora's ecosystem, and saving Elpis from being destroyed by the Dahl Corporation's Lost Legion. The ex-Lanceman Roland also assists Handsome Jack in retaking Helios and betrays him by destroying the Eye of Helios, the weaponized eye of The Destroyer capable of destroying planets.

Post Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel:

This is a message to any Crimson Lance left on Pandora. General Knoxx is dead, and knowing the Lance, they're more likely to cut their losses and leave you here than send an extraction ship. So unless you wanna starve to death out there, you've got two options. One, you become bandits. Two, you join me in protecting the people of Sanctuary. I can offer you food, shelter, and the chance to fight for something real, something meaningful -- a chance I know the Atlas Corporation never gave you. Roland, out.
— Lost Echo for the challenge Rise of the Crimson Raiders, found on a podium in Moxxxis.

After learning of Handsome Jack's plan to release and control The Warrior, the Crimson Lance deserter and Vault Hunter, Roland, was able to convince some of the abandoned Crimson Lance soldiers to form the Crimson Raiders to battle against the Hyperion Corporation's occupation of Pandora.[31] The Vault Hunters Roland and Lilith massacred the Crimson Lance soldiers in Old Haven (except the garrison guarding the Gortys Project) who did not join the Crimson Raiders or a Bandit faction. The Hyperion Corporation also placed bounties on the heads of all Lance Assassins. The Crimson Lance's former fiefdom of Sanctuary was converted into the Crimson Raiders headquarters.

The former Omega Assassin and Vault Hunter Athena decided to go on a rampage and assassinate all members of the Crimson Lance and Atlas Corporation employees on Pandora who were still loyal to the Atlas Corporation. Athena managed to assassinate all members of the Crimson Lance and Atlas Employees on Pandora except General Pollux and Doctor Cassius Leclemaine. During Athena's slaughter of the Gortys Project's Crimson Lance garrison, General Pollux escaped to a hidden Crimson Lance bunker under Bossanova's arena, where he placed himself in suspended animation.

Tales from the Borderlands

After surviving Bossanova's arena, Rhys Strongfork, Vaughn, Fiona, and Sasha fell into the hidden Crimson Lance bunker, where they found General Pollux and gouged out his eye to acquire a Gortys Project map piece. After arriving in Old Haven, the four discovered the hidden Gortys Project facility and watched security footage of Athena murdering the Crimson Lance garrison. The Handsome Jack AI in Rhys's cybernetics hacks into the Gortys Project facility's automated defenses, sending Lance Probes after August, Senior Vice President of Securities Propaganda of Hyperion Corporation Hugo P. Vasquez and their goons, with Rhys taking personal control of a smaller Lance Probe he nicknamed Dumpy.

Borderlands 3

With Rhys Strongfork's acquisition of the Atlas Corporation from Handsome Jack's official certificate of ownership over the Atlas Corporation, the Atlas Corporation and the reconstituted Crimson Lance began to become significant players in galactic affairs again. When Maliwan Corporation's Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, Katagawa Junior, became interested in becoming friends with Rhys and acquiring the Atlas Corporation for Maliwan, he decided to invade the Atlas Corporation's homeworld of Promethea with Maliwan's privatized army as force was the only way he knew how to make friends. Maliwan's forces pushed the Crimson Lance out of the Meridian Metroplex and into the Meridian Outskirts and Atlas HQ. At the same time, the Maliwan-backed Children of the Vault forces under one of Mad Moxxi's exes, Kenneth (a.k.a Killavolt), and the Crimson Lance turncoat Judge Hightower and the traitorous troops under his command pushed the Crimson Lance out of Lectra City. During the invasion, Rhys assumed the rank of Wartime General and led the Crimson Lance forces in the defense of Promethea.

Maliwan forces also hacked into the Atlas-owned AMBER LAMPS, Service/Helper Bots, Recycler/Waste Bots, Fire/Extinguisher Bots, Medic/Fixer Bots, Billyclub/Basher Bots, Deputy/Constable Bots, and Sheriff/Officer Bots of the Meridian Metroplex. They turned the Hacked Bots against the Crimson Lance forces guarding the planet. Crimson Lance soldiers under the command of Skyman were assigned by Atlas High Command to protect Promethean Civilians from the invading troops. After Atlas Operative Zer0 recruited the anti-Maliwan guerilla fighter, Lorelei, she was placed in command of Skyman and his troops. During the siege of Promethea, a team of Atlas Spies consisting of Lanceman Gonner Maleggies and three other Crimson Lance soldiers were disguised as Maliwan Assault Troopers and sent to Skywell-27 to gather dirt on Katagawa Jr. in an attempt to break the Maliwan-Children of the Vault alliance.

During the invasion of Promethea, the Crimson Raiders arrived on the planet in search of Vault Key fragments and The Forgotten Basilica. Atlas Operative Lorelei, Lanceman Skyman, and Crimson Lance soldiers protected Promthean civilians from a Maliwan assault with the assistance from the Vault Hunters: ex-Vladof Gunner First Class Moserah "Moze" Hayussinian Yan-Lun al-Amir Andreyevna, FL4K, Zane Flynt, and the Siren Amara "the Tiger of Partali." With the Vault Hunters' help, the Crimson Lance was able to protect the civilians in the Meridian Outskirts and recapture their Watershed Base in the Meridian Metroplex. With the Vault Hunters' aid, the Crimson Lance was able to secure their caffeine and Ratch burger supply lines, turn COV and Maliwan forces against each other on Skywell-27, gain access to a weapon that counters NOGs, and defend Atlas HQ from a Maliwan assault.

After assisting the Crimson Lance in defending Meridian against the Maliwan-COV invasion, several Crimson Lance soldiers were stationed aboard the Crimson Raider ship Sanctuary III, and during GenIVIV's hijacking of Sanctuary III, Crimson Lance Techs assisted the Crimson Raiders in fighting off the ship's hacked Service/Helper Bots.

Challenges

Equipment

The Crimson Lance has been known to field a variety of weapons, armor, shields, grenades, grenade mods, vehicles, and their own weapon chests.

Weaponry

Crimson Lance soldiers have been witnessed wielding Submachine Guns (SMGs), Combat Rifles, Shotguns, Rocket Launchers, Repeater Pistols, and Revolvers manufactured by Atlas, Dahl, Hyperion, Jakobs, Maliwan, S&S Munitions, Tediore, Torgue, and Vladof in Borderlands. Due to the Atlas Corporation's monopoly over Eridian technology, some Crimson Lance members can be witnessed wielding Eridian weapons. The Crimson Lance is also known to field Protean Grenades manufactured by Pangolin and field Grenade Mods manufactured by the Anshin, Atlas, Dahl, Hyperion, Jakobs, Maliwan, Pangolin, S&S Munitions, Tediore, Torgue, and Vladof. Crimson Lance soldiers have been witnessed fielding Corrosive, Explosive, Incendiary, Shock, and Transfusion weapons and Grenade Mods.

Lance Engineers, Badass Lance Engineers, Lance Combat Medics, Badass Lance Chemical Troopers, Badass Lance Pyros, and Badass Lance Shock Troopers are known to field at least five different models of the Atlas Corporation's Scorpio Turrets. Lance Assassins are equipped with dual plasma swords for melee and shuriken for ranged combat. The Crimson Lance have been known to deploy Lance Mines to control waterways.

By Borderlands 3 all Crimson Lance soldiers are seen exclusively wielding Atlas weaponry. The scientist Quinn developed the NOG Potion #9 grenade mod manufactured by Vladof for the Crimson Lance so that they could use it to turn NOGs against Maliwan. All munitions used by the Crimson Lance in Borderlands 3 are manufactured by the Dahl Corporation.

Body Armor

Most Crimson Lance trooper armor focuses on providing protection the wearer's head, torso, arms, hips, knees, and shins. The material used in the construction of the Crimson Lance armor is vulnerable to corrosive attacks. Crimson Lance personnel have been witnessed fielding shields manufactured by Anshin, Atlas, Dahl, Hyperion, Maliwan, Pangolin, S&S Munitions, Tediore, Torgue, and Vladof, with some using shields with Corrosive, Explosive, Incendiary, and Shock elemental resistance. Crimson Lance trooper armor is equipped with special energy cores that augment the wearer's capabilities. Power Cores increases the wearer's melee and projectile damage, Speed Cores increase the wearer's movement speed, and Shock Cores allow the wearer's shields to instantly charge, causes constant recharging after an initial charge, and allows the armor to release Shock Novas. Lance Assassins wear lighter full body armor that affords them more agility in combat. The Crimson Lance also have access to jetpacks that are mainly used by Lance Rocketeers.

Class Optimization Modules

The Soldier Class Optimization Modules (COMs) manufactured by Anshin, Atlas, Dahl, Jakobs, Maliwan, S&S Munitions, Torgue, and Vladof seem to be created for use by Crimson Lance troops. Vehicles

The Crimson Lance commonly fields Lance Assault Pods to conduct rapid insertions into areas. The Crimson Lancer variant of the Lancer Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) has been use by the Crimson Lance to patrol road ways in Parched Fathoms on Pandora. The Crimson Lance 114th Bouncer Division was seen to have field at least one tank. Devastators and Badass Devastators are equipped with large 20 foot tall mech suits equipped with a variety of weaponry mounted on the suit. While fighting against Maliwan on Promethea, the Crimson Lance used at least one Technical.

Robots

The Crimson Lance has been known to use Lance Probes to provide security for Crimson Lance facilities, police roadways, and spy on settlements.[22] Gortys was a robot designed by the Atlas Corporation to be used by the Crimson Lance to locate and lockdown the Vault of The Traveler. The Crimson Lance troopers in the Crimson Fastness have been known to use CL4P-TP General Purpose Robots as target practice.[32] After the Vault Hunters secured a food supply chain with Dynasty Diner, Holloway Robotics' Burger Bots began supplying food to the Watershed Base in the Meridian Metroplex.

Lilith Fighting Crimson Lance Troops

The Crimson Lance are the most well-equipped human opponents in Borderlands. They carry weapons and equipment of higher quality than is seen in Bandit hands - uncommon or better weapons and modded grenades - and many also use orb shields, while all of them wear body armor. Anyone facing them must take care as their high quality equipment gives them considerable firepower and added lasting power. On the other hand, their being better equipped does mean they will always drop some loot: any combination of the gun, grenade mod and shield they were using. This can make them a prime source of excellent loot particularly in four-player games.

In addition, all Crimson Lance soldiers wear body armor that primarily covers their head, chest, arms and shins. This armor reduces non-elemental bullet damage considerably, making them difficult to kill. Though they have the same weak spot as all other human enemies (the head), their armor also reduces the damage inflicted by head shots, while their movement and constant output of suppressing firepower makes aiming for their heads difficult. The frequent use of armor means that Corrosive weapons are very effective against them; while the damage-over-time effect is active, the Corrosive damage effect also temporarily weakens their armor, mitigating some of its damage reduction and allowing other attacks to penetrate more effectively. However, take special care of the occasional Crimson Lance soldier equipped with a Corrosive resistance orb shield; like any other enemy equipped with such a shield, they will flash green when hit. If the character does not have sufficiently leveled weapons, aiming for the exposed thighs is an option to maximize the damage dealt.

The ballistic shields wielded by Lance Defenders cover most of their body when they are facing attackers, and any shots striking it will do zero damage. Powerful or sustained shots to their shield can knock it aside, allowing an opportunity to shoot at their bodies or heads. The shields are also not tall enough to completely protect their heads so a decent marksman should be able to shoot over the shield and hit them for critical damage. The shields will also never cover their feet, so if they are not behind other cover this is also a viable target. Lastly, the splash effect from most elemental weapons can often get around the shield to hit the soldiers themselves. Elemental weapons, sniper rifles and automatic weapons are therefore highly regarded for use against Lance Defenders.

Lance Engineers can deploy a Scorpio Turret which supplements their own firepower. Because the Scorpio is stationary and has a fixed fire arc, characters can avoid its damage by jumping over it or moving around and outside its range of rotation. The Scorpio is quite durable but vanishes when the Lance Engineer dies, so the Lance Engineer is usually the preferred target. The Scorpio can otherwise be used for Second Wind if it remains exposed when the Lance Engineer gets behind cover.

Finally, Crimson Lance Badasses have a lot more health and even more armor than their ordinary counterparts. All of them wear additional armor plates, including large shoulder guards that block line of sight to their heads from most angles and completely negate bullet damage in that location the same way the shields of Lance Defenders do. Furthermore, every part of their body is covered in damage-reducing armor. They are virtually immune to normal gunfire, though critical hits will still do some damage. They also seem to be more aggressive and more willing to get close or pursue the character during firefights than the rank-and-file Crimson Lance mercenaries.

Despite how formidable they are, these Badasses otherwise behave like their respective type. Badass Lance Infantry are very mobile and aggressive; Badass Lance Defenders will have shields and will flinch once these shields absorb enough damage; Badass Lance Engineers will drop Scorpio Turrets. The recommended tactics against their ordinary versions still apply but extra care must be taken. The use of elemental weapons, specifically Corrosive weapons, are especially emphasized in dealing with them.

Notes

  • Crimson Lance can occasionally be found wielding Eridian weapons. Such weapons are commonly found on high-level Lance Infantry and Elemental Troopers.
  • The Crimson Lance use assault pods for quick force deployment, which can be seen in The Salt Flats, Crimson Enclave and Eridian Promontory. In The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC, some of these assault pods can be seen arriving from a distance, and standing in the way of the flying rocket's landing zone will result in death due to pod impact.

Borderlands

This is Commandant Steele of the Atlas Corporation Crimson Lance, D Company, 3rd Starborne Brigade. I've just been informed that you have arrived on Pandora in search of The Vault, and within minutes, have started killing the locals and causing a disturbance. This planet is under the authority of the Atlas Corporation, and any Eridian artifacts found here are Atlas property; possession of such property carries a stiff penalty. Invite you to turn yourself in at once to the nearest Lance outpost and surrender any information or artifacts in your possession. Consider this your one and only warning.
— ECHO Log: Commandant Steele - Introducing Steele
It's come to our attention that you've been at war with elements of the local population, and you've now been contracted to assassinate one of their leaders. This type of unsanctioned mercenary activity undermines the stability of the region. You have been warned! These continued insurgent activates will not be tolerated. Abandon this futile pursuit, and turn yourself in while you still can.
— ECHO Log: Commandant Steele - You're Not Fooling Anyone
Listen up, merc. There is no fourth key fragment. Tannis has joined us, and we now have possession of the completed key. She used you to get what she wanted. You've ignored my orders, but I'll cut you a deal, leave the planet now, and we won't pursue you. Do yourself a favor, take advantage of my generosity while you still can. Any further disobedience will cost you and the citizens of this planet dearly.
— ECHO Log: Commandant Steele - Tannis Is With Us
This Commandant Steele of the Atlas Corporation Crimson Lance, Starborne Brigade. Be advised. In preparation of upcoming special operations of the Lance, I have ordered the ECHO network shut down. Any attempt to circumvent our control will be met with punishment of death. Do not test me, or we may shut down the commerce as well. This is the only warning you will receive.

Lanceman: Ice cream day, oh snap, it's ice cream day! Rocky Road, a-la-mode? Oh, I'm in the mode for ice cream day!

Derrick: Oh dear God, what was that?

Lanceman: You were recording that? Dude, dude, that is so mean. You are so mean, Derrick. I'm not sharing my ice cream with you. It's Rocky Road, too.

Derrick: Oh, I heard. I just need the access code for today.

Lanceman: No, no, no, no, Derrick, it was your day to have the access code. I'm on personal ice cream leave of absence; code 3 dot 5 dot 31 in the manual clearly states--

Derrick: Then where is the code?

Lanceman: You had it. I saw you.

Derrick: Oh, no... that is bad. Oh, I screwed up big time.

Lanceman: What did you do, Derrick?

Derrick: I might have played hookie to go check out the World's Largest Bullet. I think I left it there.

Lanceman: You left the access code, something that jeopardizes all of our lives - that's ALL of them - at the World's Largest Bullet?

Derrick: Yes, Correct.

Lanceman: Eh I got ice cream.

— ECHO Log: Soldiers - Uh oh...
The depot access code is now Blue, Yellow, Cyan, Orange. If that's too hard for your walnut-sized brains to grapple, I've also made this handy acron- uh, word to remember. BYCO. Just remember BYCO, blue, yellow, cyan, orange. Or, BYCO. ... You're all just retarded. ... I don't even know why I try anymore...
— ECHO Log: General Knoxx -Todays code - BYCO
