Experience points (also exp or XP) are the primary reward for undertaking adventures in Borderlands. Every character starts with 0 experience points and at level 1. Completing missions and killing hostile creatures results in experience points awarded to all of the characters present in the group. Completing achievements or challenges will also increase exp.
Experience points can be gained during the course of the game, and can only be lost by exiting the game without saving. Should an unsaved exit occur, the experience total will be reverted back to the most recent game save.

In both Borderlands and Borderlands 2 the amount of experience necessary to reach level x equals ceil(60x2.8 − 60).
Once the experience is gained, the character will increase his or her level automatically. The maximum level in Borderlands is 69 with The Secret Armory of General Knoxx and patch 1.4.1 installed. Players with only the patch are limited to level 58. If neither the DLC nor the patch is installed, the maximum level is 50 in non-Game Of The Year editions. The maximum level in Borderlands 2 is 50, with an increase to 61 after the Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode patch is released on April 2, 2013.
When a level is gained, the words "Level Up" will overlay the screen. At this point, health and shield capacity are filled to their new maximum, and the action skill's cooldown is completed.
Increasing in level will automatically increase the character's health and melee damage. In addition, every level from 5 onward grants the character one skill point, resulting in 46 skill points at level 50, 54 at level 58, and 65 at level 69. In Borderlands the character can also acquire one free skill point in each of the two playthroughs from Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution, meaning a character can accumulate up to 69 skill points.
