2K Australia's Logo

2K Australia was an Australian video game developer based in Canberra, Australia, and the lead developer of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, with Gearbox Software providing development support. 2K Australia was shut down on April 16 2015.

History[]

The studio was founded in 2000 as Irrational Canberra with Jonathan Chey taking the helm, and in 2007 they changed their name to 2K Australia. The studio's main focus according to press releases was to develop new intellectual property and co-develop products with other 2K studios.

Originally part of Irrational Games, 2K Australia joined 2K Marin in 2010 upon the announcement of its new XCOM game. However, in late 2011 2K Marin and 2K Australia separated once again.

On 16 April 2015, the studio announced it was closing, stating that the costs of operating a game studio in Australia was too high. 2K was Australia's only remaining AAA developer.

Development Background[]

2K Australia is most notable for its collaborative work with Irrational Games on the BioShock series, as well as being one of the two (the other being 2K Marin) developers of BioShock 2.

Before their work on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, 2K Australia also provided development for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
