The Madhous! is a legendary assault rifle in Borderlands 2 manufactured by Bandit. It is obtained randomly from any suitable loot source, but has an increased chance to drop from Mad Dog located in Lynchwood.

Special Weapon Effects[]

It's a Madhouse! A MADHOUSE!!! – +100% weapon damage. Increased accuracy and magazine size. Bullets fired will follow a slightly swerving path that swerves back and forth left-right or up-down (orientation is random), then will split into two upon impact and bounce; bullets become faster after every bounce.

Usage & Description[]

While the Madhous!'s split projectile effect would seem to be immensely useful for combat in enemy-rich environments, the swerving, slow behavior of the initial projectile almost completely nullifies the benefits of the split projectile effect and the damage and magazine size boosts. The projectile path is so random that shots fired at a distance of one to two body lengths not only have a chance of missing the targeted body part, but are also likely to miss the target entirely.

The Madhous!'s projectiles' ricochet trajectories are not truly random, but rather pseudorandom: all shots fired at a specific point will follow the same trajectory, and any ricochets will be identical with similarly-angled obstacles, though recoil and naturally imperfect balance will cause a little deviation. In other words, a shot that hits a vertical wall at a certain angle from a certain distance from the shooter will follow the same trajectory as if it had hit any other vertical wall at the same angle from that same distance, provided all previous deflections, if any, were also identical to the actual shot's. This makes the gun useful for hitting enemies from behind cover, and allows critical hits to be made regularly in the case of the largest and most stationary enemies such as Uranus, provided there are suitable ricochet points.

Despite these issues, the Madhous! has some beneficial use against large mobs of enemies, particularly when aimed at the ground near the center of the group of enemies. The random trajectory of both the initial projectile and the split projectiles will provide ample coverage over a somewhat large area, and even better in tight spaces such as the makeshift "neighborhoods" created by bandits in Lynchwood or Tundra Express, though the likelihood of critical hits without some experimental aiming is nearly zero when using the weapon in this manner. Control Core Angel is especially well-suited for the Madhous!, being a completely closed environment.

Notes[]

  • The Madhous! was dropped by Mad Mike on Day 11 of the Borderlands 2 Loot Hunt. A hotfix on that day also increased the weapon's damage.
  • On Day 19 of the Borderlands 2 Loot Hunt, the Madhous! and all other Bandit assault rifles had an increase in magazine size from a hotfix.
  • Even with Gaige's Close Enough, the Madhous! is impractical because when the projectiles split and ricochet, it does so at a fixed angle. Thus, even when Close Enough activates, the split projectiles don't fire directly at the enemy, but rather to the left and right, making missed shots a common occurrence.
  • As with all other guns, shots from the Madhous! are absorbed by ION Loaders' force fields.
  • Buzzard-spawning towers make ideal ricochet points for taking out Buzzards.

Trivia[]

  • The term "madhouse" is a euphemism for a psychiatric hospital.
  • The flavor text is a quote from the 1968 film Planet of the Apes.
  • The Madhous! was originally intended to be a part of Mad Dog's loot pool. However, he was mistakenly given a loot pool identical to Madame Von Bartlesby and as such, he dropped the Baby Maker instead. This was patched in Early August 2013, and Mad Dog now has an increased chance to drop the Madhous!
  • The Madhous! has the same material as the Badaboom.
