Material grade naming varies per manufacturer. Values are taken straight from localization files; quotation marks enclose intentionally included (or excluded) space characters.
Material grade affects both the color scheme of the weapon/item as well as the strength of the manufacturer bonuses.

Class Mod/COM Material Grades

Unlike weapon and shield material grades, class mod materials do not contribute to the name of the class mod.
Borderlands 2
In Borderlands 2, material grade does not name the weapon, it determines (or is determined by) the weapon's rarity. Each manufacturer has a set skin for each weapon type at a given rarity value, going from dull, faded near-while to increasingly sharp and colourful designs as rarity increases. All Legendary weapons have their own unique material.
