Strategy
This is a solo build for players who like to get up close an personal. It focuses on 3 things:
- Shotguns
- Grenades
- Turret
It is built around one of the most powerful and highly available guns in the game - the Maliwan Crux. the Crux is an amazing weapon even for characters that have no skills to boost it, so long as they are proficient....but when you put it in the hands of a Soldier with shotgun focus, it mows down pretty much anything in the game with ease. Armored enemies like Crimson Lance with combat shields and Rocket Turrets don't last more than 2 seconds against you. For backup against corrosive immunes have a Blast shotgun in a secondary slot.
Maxing out Grenadier is great synergy for a shotgun specialist; it allows you to throw grenades with abandon because you know you'll never run out. This allows you to toss several grenades ahead of you before charging in to finish what's left with your shotgun. Great for softening up huge hordes of enemies before getting in their faces. You can do this one of two ways: Throw damage grenades to whittle down enemy hitpoints before finishing them off, or toss several transfusion grenades as you engage so that you continuously heal while bathing in enemy fire (and shoving your shotgun barrel down their throats).
The last part adds yet another dynamic to the fighting. With sufficient skillpoint expenditure the Scorpio Turret is a powerful ally. It is capable of dealing great damage at longer ranges than your shotgun. Its homing missiles can get behind Spiderants to strike their soft behinds. You can use the turret as a distraction (enemies will often engage the turret instead of you if it is closer), or drop it and use yourself as the bait while it blows them apart. Absolutely great for soloing Spiderant mobs as they can't cover their vulnerable backsides against both you and the turret at the same time. The turret is also great for the Eridian Promontory; select a shock artifact so that it can destroy Eridian shields, putting them at your mercy.
Lastly, you'll notice that no points were added to Fitness, despite the build demanding close range combat. Make up for this by making good use of strafing and cover, and don't forget to use your grenades and turret. You'll find that you don't even miss Fitness. Putting a single point in Quick Charge and then boosting it with a Commando Mod will protect you just fine. If even that isn't enough (a situation i have never experienced), spam Transfusion grenades.
Pros
- Superb damage in close quarters combat.
- Terrorizes the tougher enemies in the game
- Grenades and Turret are a powerful counter when getting mobbed
Cons
- Not a tank build. Have to play smart.
- Can still kill enemies at range with 10-15 proficiency in combat rifles, but not as effective as a rifle or sniper specialist.
- Multiplayer is tougher, as you are getting in close combat with enemies who have tougher defense.
